Outrageous Internet Campaign of Lies and Smears Destroyed This Man's Life

You might think something like couldn't possibly happen, but the internet being what it is, I must say, this is one of the worst cases of online harassment I've ever heard of, dang.

At NYT (with all the usual disclaimers), "A Vast Web of Vengeance":

Outrageous lies destroyed Guy Babcock’s online reputation. When he went hunting for their source, what he discovered was worse than he could have imagined.

Guy Babcock vividly remembers the chilly Saturday evening when he discovered the stain on his family. It was September 2018. He, his wife and their young son had just returned to their home in Beckley, an English village outside of Oxford. Mr. Babcock still had his coat on when he got a frantic call from his father.

“I don’t want to upset you, but there is some bad stuff on the internet,” Mr. Babcock recalled his father saying. Someone, somewhere, had written terrible things online about Guy Babcock and his brother, and members of their 86-year-old father’s social club had alerted him.

Mr. Babcock, a software engineer, got off the phone and Googled himself. The results were full of posts on strange sites accusing him of being a thief, a fraudster and a pedophile. The posts listed Mr. Babcock’s contact details and employer.

The images were the worst: photos taken from his LinkedIn and Facebook pages that had “pedophile” written across them in red type. Someone had posted the doctored images on Pinterest, and Google’s algorithms apparently liked things from Pinterest, and so the pictures were positioned at the very top of the Google results for “Guy Babcock.”

Mr. Babcock, 59, was not a thief, a fraudster or a pedophile. “I remember being in complete shock,” he said. “Why would someone do this? Who could it possibly be? Who would be so angry?”

Then he Googled his brother’s name. The results were just as bad.

He tried his wife.

His sister.

His brother-in-law.

His teenage nephew.

His cousin.

His aunt.

They had all been hit. The men were branded as child molesters and pedophiles, the women as thieves and scammers. Only his 8-year-old son had been spared.

Guy Babcock was about to discover the power of a lone person to destroy countless reputations, aided by platforms like Google that rarely intervene. He was shocked when he discovered the identity of the assailant, the number of other victims and the duration of the digital violence.

Uncensored Vengeance

Public smears have been around for centuries. But they are far more effective in the internet age, gliding across platforms that are loath to crack down, said Peter W. Singer, co-author of “LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media.”

The solution, he said, was to identify “super-spreaders” of slander, the people and the websites that wage the most vicious false attacks.

“The way to make the internet a less toxic place is setting limits on super-spreaders or even knocking them offline,” Mr. Singer said. “Instead of policing everyone, we should police those who affect the most people.”

The Babcock family had been targeted by a super-spreader, dragged into an internet cesspool where people’s reputations are held for ransom.

Mr. Babcock was sure there was a way to have lies about him wiped from the internet. Many of the slanderous posts appeared on a website called Ripoff Report, which describes itself as a forum for exposing “complaints, reviews, scams, lawsuits, frauds.” (Its tagline: “consumers educating consumers.”)

He started clicking around and eventually found a part of the site where Ripoff Report offered “arbitration services,” which cost up to $2,000, to get rid of “substantially false” information. That sounded like extortion; Mr. Babcock wasn’t about to pay to have lies removed.

Ripoff Report is one of hundreds of “complaint sites” — others include She’s a Homewrecker, Cheaterbot and Deadbeats Exposed — that let people anonymously expose an unreliable handyman, a cheating ex, a sexual predator.

But there is no fact-checking. The sites often charge money to take down posts, even defamatory ones. And there is limited accountability. Ripoff Report, like the others, notes on its site that, thanks to Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act, it isn’t responsible for what its users post.

If someone posts false information about you on the Ripoff Report, the CDA prohibits you from holding us liable for the statements which others have written. You can always sue the author if you want, but you can’t sue Ripoff Report just because we provide a forum for speech.
With that impunity, Ripoff Report and its ilk are willing to host pure, uncensored vengeance.

A Familiar Portrait

Google results are often the first impression a person makes. They help people decide whom to date, to hire, to rent a home to. Mr. Babcock worried that his family’s terrible Google search profiles could have serious repercussions, particularly for his 19-year-old nephew and his 27-year-old cousin, both just starting out in life.

Two weeks after Mr. Babcock discovered the pedophile posts, a friend called: He’d heard about the accusations from another village resident. Someone had spotted them while Googling an ice-cream parlor the Babcock family owned. Mr. Babcock soon installed a home security system; he’d read about vigilantes going after accused child molesters.

He and members of his extended family reported the online harassment to police in England and Canada, where most of them lived. Only the British authorities appeared to take the report seriously; a 1988 law prohibits communications that intentionally cause distress. An officer with the local Thames Valley police told Mr. Babcock to gather the evidence, so he and his brother-in-law, Luc Groleau, who lives outside of Montreal, started cataloging the posts in a Google document. It grew to more than 100 pages.

In October 2018, while scrolling through items deep in his Google results, Mr. Babcock came across a blog where a commenter falsely called him “a former janitor” who was “masquerading as an IT consultant.” It was similar to attacks elsewhere, but this one had an author photo attached: a woman with long, reddish hair, wearing a black blazer and chunky earrings...

Still lots more, including how Mr. Babcock was finally able to get the upper hand, and had his day in court, so to speak.

White Male Dominance in Journalism

Um, okay.

I saw earlier the Guardian's investigation of their own commenters on their website, and yawned.

Charles C. Johnson Threatens Lawsuit After Twitter Suspends Accounts for Alleged TOS Violations

Everybody hates Chuck Johnson because he plays no favorites and goes after anyone and everyone. He doesn't bother me, although I don't RT him that much anymore. I don't need the aggravation from all the PC conservatives out there.

In any case, he's been banned over nothing more than a metaphor. See Pat Dollard, "Conservative Journalist Charles C. Johnson Suspended From Twitter Over 'Taking Out' Metaphor."

Johnson's account is still down.

More at Pando, "Here’s the remarkable letter Chuck Johnson’s attorney sent to Twitter threatening legal action."

No 'Troll Rights' on Twitter for Terrorist Jihadis

Heh, I guess the ISIS jihadis weren't pleased to find out they had no "troll rights" on Twitter.

At Breitbart, "TWITTER CEO: ISIS THREATENED TO ASSASSINATE ME FOR DELETING JIHADIST ACCOUNTS."

ISIS jihadists are just like leftist trolls, in that regard. They threaten to make your life miserable, if not kill you, if you deny they have a right to post at "public commenting systems." I mean really. Like Twitter and Blogger are "public commenting systems." But then, leftists like this smear conservatives as racist for standing up against jihad, so no surprise that Twitter CEO Dick Costolo is getting these death threats. Nothing --- nothing! --- is allowed to stand in the way of leftist-Islamist totalitarianism.

'Since trolls actually derive pleasure from the suffering of others, engaging with them at all can be counter-productive...'

From Roger Dooley, at Forbes, "Internet Trolls Really Are Psychos."

I should follow his advice about avoiding engagement, but with my stalking hate-troll Walter James Casper III, the lulz are irresistible:

Thousands March Against Israel in Los Angeles: Racist Repsac3 Sees Conspiracy of 'Phony' Protest

Perhaps readers will feel sorry for him, as apparently Walter James Casper III is a dead man walking, with a debilitating heart condition, but it's just sad that he's losing his cognitive faculties as well.

Thousands turned out for the protest march I covered last weekend in Los Angeles. See the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, "Pro-Palestinian protest in Westwood draws thousands, causes Wilshire to shut down."

Never mind that, though. It turns out that near-death Repsac3, in his diminished capacity, is bizarrely warping reality in his ongoing demonization efforts and hate-mongering. It was a "phony" protest, or something:

Well, we know Repsac hates Israel and the Jews --- given his long history of tweeting support for the racist Occupy Wall Street movement, not to mention his tweets backing the Jew-hating BDS movment --- so his conspiracies are all of a piece. Right in line with this old man urging Muslims to stand up and blame the Jews for the September 11 attacks. Yep, this is what Reppy's all about::

Repsac3 started trolling me over six years ago, upset that I was paying no attention to him, and he's never given up. That is some obsession. His stalking hate-blog is now members-only, but he continues to troll my online presence relentlessly, and at this point it's actually clinical and perverted. The dude should give it up and take care of his health, enjoy whatever remainder of time he has on this good green earth.

And most of all, he should just disassociate with the racist anti-Israel protesters he's been reaching out to. Seriously, these are terrible people. Liars and racists. Too bad for Reppy, but it's come to this in his twilight.

Comments Closed at Althouse

This happened over the weekend.

Ann writes:
There were some great commenters over the years, some of whom were driven away by vicious commenters. I emphasized free speech until I was forced to retrench and make good faith the test. But that was a deletion policy. I (and Meade) can't spend all our time monitoring comments and deleting. Some truly ugly people stooped to active harassment. This is my place, after all, and I can't host an endless party where there are guests who continually abuse my hospitality. I had to close the door.
She'll reopen the comments. Althouse isn't a blog that can survive without them. But she's been getting too many trolls and it's been taking too much time to deal with them. There's some background that I haven't completely mastered yet, but the sense is that a lot of Instapundit readers are coming over to Althouse and f-king sh*t up.

Here's a post with a long comment thread that relates, "'A somewhat dismissive response'." And Ann's response, "Instapundit says that what he thinks about what he calls my "advice" is "immaterial" but that it's 'probably pretty good advice'..."

That latter post features nearly 300 comments and is time-stamped at 9:26am on the 7th.

Then, checking the search function for "comments," Ann posts a poll on comments at 6:17pm that evening; a flashback to opening comments at the blog in 2005 at 7:07pm; and an invitation to comment by email to Meade at 7:53pm.

Ann's also ruminating and commiserating publicly in updates.

Reading through some of the comments at the various posts, I saw mention of using comment moderation, but Ann indicates that the Blogger "moderate comments" function is not working for her blog. I switched to Disqus some time ago, so I can't comment on how well comment moderation is working on Blogger. I emailed Ann with some information about Disqus commenting, which works well for a lot of Blogger bloggers, especially the useful service of importing old Blogger comments into the Disqus system. It worked for me, although I don't know with Ann's huge archive of comments that it's worth the risk. Ann loves that archive as a history of a community, and once you switch over to Disqus you might have a hard time switching back to Blogger commenting. I don't know, since I haven't felt like switching back, but it's a dilemma.

But something else occurred to me: Clicking on the "post a comment" link at the blog reveals that "Comments on this blog are restricted to team members." I've never used that function, but basically any commenter at the blog has to be a pre-approved team member of the Althouse community. It's not much different that comment registration at a Wordpress blog, and that raises the possibility for Ann and Meade just to create and solicit a pre-approved Althouse blog commenting community. I hesitate to use the example, but folks may remember that Charles Johnson's Little Green Footballs was one of the top counter-jihad blogs, and putatively conservative. Charles is positively obsessed with controlling his comments. He pre-approved comments though a sort of random lottery where he'd open the commenting system to new registrants for a short time at unannounced intervals. He'd often get dozens --- if not hundreds --- of new commenters who registered, which he called "hatchlings." It was kind of a big deal back in the day, because folks really wanted to be part of the LGF community. Charles would close the registration window and announce how many new members joined. People would constantly be checking the blog, at the least, to see if they could catch the window opening for new commenters. I never did register, because I didn't care about it that much, and besides, when LGF started posting all the aggressive Darwinism/anti-Christian hatred ... well, the idea of joining the community decidedly lost its appeal. And as for LGF today ... no doubt readers are aware of that tragedy.

But still, it's an interesting example. Say Althouse were to open her comments to new registrants periodically, say on the weekend mornings. This could be done by email requests sent to Ann or Meade by interested readers. They'd have to have a Blogger ID and then could be approved to comment at the blog. If at any time those commenters became abusive they could be banned at a moment's notice.

She's going to need to do something like this. A large plurality responding to her poll said that the blog was basically all about the comments. I actually read Althouse more for the content than the comments, but certainly the comments are a major draw for any reader. I'll never forget the Jessica Valenti "breasts" controversy, at which time I found myself reading comments for hours. That was seven years ago. The blogosphere wouldn't be the same without those periodic Althouse blasts of observation that upend sensibilities and rejigger thinking on some important issue or another. And of course, Ann married one of her commenters --- so c'mon, you're going to tell me that a blog that was featured at the New York Times, in a report on the blogress and her suitor, is going to now be without comments, the very feature that has defined what it is to be an Althouse reader? No way.

In any case, I personally expect commenting to open back over there not too long from now, for the reasons that I've outlined above. Ann and Meade need to find the right way to manage it, because the hatred and vitriol online is extremely "mellow-harshing," as I've written about here many times. But bloggers have their own systems. Some don't allow comments and work more as portals to the Internet. Some bloggers are vanity whores where having comments would be impossible since they'd expose the naked emperor. The opposite of that is Ann's blog, which the New York Times situated as a metaphor for a royal court. That's a pretty good one, as Ann's certainly a benign blog monarch who tolerates much in the realm. But of late the commoners have become so rancid as to completely discombobulate the kingdom (or princess-ipality, be that as it may).

In any case, I'll be checking over at Althouse to see how things go. It's going to work out.

UPDATED: Ann writes to say that opening the comments to "team members" would open the front page to everybody, which is a no-can-do situation. Well, I tried.

Bwahaha!! Poor Widdle Wepsac3 Whines Hilariously: 'I'm the Victim! It's Me, I'm the Victim!'

OMG, this is the best.

Racist harassment troll Walter James Casper (the whiny little bitch) is now claiming he's the victim of harassment. Yeah, that oughta work. The lulz. They hurt. You can't make this stuff up. STOP. ROTFLMFAO!

I must be a really bad harasser, because Widdle Wepsac3, who now keeps a wee widdle clock counter at his harassment blog, completely missed me allegedly harassing him on Twitter. I gotta up my game, BHAHAHAHA!!

Wait! Wait!

He writes at his stupid troll rights blog, "43 days without a single obsessive attack from Dishonest Don..."

BWAHAHAHA!! Time to get back to school, loser. Math is hard! OMG that's hilarious. Such a dork.

Maybe subtract about ten days off of that, dork loser dirtbag. Folks know what you're all about: a sick harassment troll who needs some help:

Yeah, that twerp again. I replied:

ICYMI, the background's here, "Disgusting Troll Rights Harassment Blogger Continues Lying About Years-Long Campaign of Intimidation."

Widdle Whiny Wepsac3 wrote a widdle whiny post saying that old "Dishonest Don" is a bad, bad man. Meany old Donald is stalking Widdle Weppy! BWHAHAHA!

Not.

Everyone in their right mind knows that racist Walter James Casper III is one of the worst Internet trolls of all time. As Zilla wrote in 2011:
I almost feel sorry for that guy. Oh and if he's reading this, he should know that he may not comment at my blog unless he registers as a known troll & pays the toll.
Ha! Widdle Walter Weppy, the "known troll." That's perfect!

He stalks people all around online, attacks and torments them, AND THEN keeps a record of every single comment he makes --- because he knows he'll be banned like the ultimate asshole! It's true, it's true! He's got a comment blog called the "Immoderate Monk," which is a repository of all of Widdle Weppy Walter's deleted comments. Or it used to be, until he couldn't keep up with getting banned wherever he went on the Internet! OMG! BWAHAHAHA!!

Stop it! I'm busting a side here.

And he's the victim?!!

No, sorry. He's not. He's a projecting pathological liar who's the ringleader of a group of leftists trolls who tried to get me fired back in 2009. If this were Maryland he'd be criminally liable for stalking and harassment under that state's laws, just like his brother-from-another mother Bill Schmalfeldt.

And did I mention Widdle Whiny Walter Weppy is a buttfreak loser who even stalked Tania Gail all the way to her YouTube page? She told me that she warned Weppy she was gonna kick his ass. He's scared of her. Poor Weppy! The whiny little bitch! OMG I'm rolling on this! Tania's gonna kick his ass!

Anyway, I gotta stop laughing.

Robert Stacy McCain has more, and boy it hits really close to home for the racist troll rights harasser Walter James Casper III.

See, "Has Bill Schmalfeldt Forgotten?":
Persistently ignoring the wrongs he has committed, he makes accusations of wrongdoing against others as justifying further sadistic harassment of his chosen enemies.
Yes, because he's a victim!

BWHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
